テキサス州オースティン拠点のアートロックバンド Fontが、7/12にAcrophase Recordsからリリースするデビューアルバム『Strange Burden』より、先行シングル 'Hey Kekulé'のMVを公開！
制作は Blake Nelson, Font。
Fontは Thom Waddill, Jack Owens, Anthony Lawrence, Roman Parnell, Logan Wagnerの5人組。
2022年の初めからライブ活動を始めたバンドですがすぐに話題となり、Yard Act, Water From Your Eyes, bar italia, Jockstrap, Horsegirl, CHAIと共演し、地元の定番フェス Austin City Limitsのメインステージに出演。
ThomとJackは大学時代に最大9人編成のカバーバンドを組んで、Stevie Wonder, Blondie, Talking Headsなどを中心に一度に何時間も即興重視の演奏していたそうで、そのエピソードを聴くと色々納得できる点があるなと思いました。
'Hey Kekulé'は『Remain in Light』の作曲プロセス(ざっくり言うと「コード進行ではなく即興を軸に曲の輪郭を形成する」みたいな感じ)を参考にした楽曲。
2024年上半期の「光のスピードで爆裂売れちぎってほしいバンド」を5つ選ぶとしたら彼らは入るでしょうし、Daniel Averyが手掛けたリミックスがかなり良いみたいな近い未来のディテールまで見えてる。知性はあるけど頭でっかちではなさそうなのがイケてるよね。
“I had recently read that Cormac McCarthy essay ‘The Kekulé Problem’ about a German chemist who dreamt an ouroboros and realized the molecular structure for benzene was a ring. McCarthy writes: ‘Why the snake? That is, why is the unconscious so loath to speak to us? Why the images, metaphors, and pictures?’ This sentiment informed many of the ideas and images and emotions I took into the song. Given the reference in the name, it is, I guess, the most referential and direct song about what I’m interested in as a lyricist and performer on the record.” - Thom Waddill
