““Colorado” follows the hazy, plastic-bottle-vodka soaked, last days of summer between two best friends in Lakewood, Colorado. This everyplace suburb, duplicated endlessly across North America, is to the narrator a place of intense joy: expansive nights under stadium lighting, in hotboxed cars, and between the arms of their closest friend. Despite the abundance of good times, we find that one of the friends plans to move at the end of the summer leaving our narrator with one question, “How could you?” The song is an exploration of this tension, between staying and going, between loyalty and self-realization, between the sacred past and the infinite future. Opening on a rooftop above a backyard pool, the narrator sings, “If you jump first, I’ll jump right in,” though in “Colorado” the pool isn’t mentioned. It’s left to the listener to decide how much sacrifice is appropriate in giving yourself to someone you love.”
