ベルギー/ブリュッセル拠点のエレクトロニックプロデューサー・ドラマー VAAGUEが、10/23にShapes No Frameからリリースしたニューシングル 'Talk It Up'を公開！
VAAGUEはドラマー・コンポーザー Antoine Pierreによるソロプロジェクト。
リーダーとして在籍するバンド Next.Ape, URBEXのほかに Mélanie De Biasio, TaxiWarsなどでサイドマンを務める人物で、世界中でライブやツアーに参加してます。
'Talk It Up'は11/28発売のEP『SHORTCUT』収録曲。
前述の著名なジャズマンとしてのキャリアとは一線を画す名義で、UKガラージ・ドラムンベース・ポストダブステップを吸収した重心低めのアグレッシブなサウンドを展開してます。特に Le Motel, Dorian Dumontが参加したセカンドEP『From the Ashes』が好きです。
また、Sensory Percussionを駆使したライブが人気で、今年のベルギー ナショナルデーには、大阪・関西万博のポップアップステージでパフォーマンスを披露してます。
ちなみに Sensory Percussionは、ドラムに装着して色んな音を出せる機材。MIDIも出力できるので音に限らず大抵のことは出来ます。ここをチェックしてる人ら辺で有名どころだと Eli Keszler、あとは最近取り上げられてないけど NAHとかが使ってます。革新的なデバイスって結構倒産しがちなのでもうちょっと流行ってほしいな。
↓同期を流して合わせるんじゃなくて(良い悪いの話じゃないよ)、叩いた箇所や強弱で別の音を出せるからライブ映えするよね。
”The drum pattern of «Talk it up» was stuck in my head for a while. It almost felt like a rhythmical mantra whenever I’d be walking out of my house. When I first played it on the kit, I could hear that bass drum being sort of a melody: that’s when I decided to add that weird bent xylophone sound on it. The growling bass that comes in every bar is an outlet to that obsessive drum pattern, adding a bit of rage to the whole track. I found balance in those synth chords that come in every now and then and give a nice nostalgic touch. Whenever I play this song, I imagine a West-African percussion group interpreting some Chicago footwork jam. Except for that ending, where I just indulged myself in this techno vortex!”
